The 100 Years War

The official pretext fort argument between France and England in the 13th-14th Century was the question of the France's line of succession. After the death of King Karl IV, who didn't have any successor's, revolted 2 candidate's their claims of the throne simultaneous:

  • Philip VI. - Cousin of the King and nephew of Phillip the beauty
  • Eduard III. - English King and on his mother side grandson of phillip the beaut

These arguments, there lasted with diverse interruption over centuries, they got their name in history the "100 year war". France was not only permanent; the danger in this war caused the occupation of England, but also the land by itself to be imminent to a crucial test. After the defeats of the French army, the situation aggravated through several insurrection's (Etienne Marcel, Jaquerie...) and internal battles between the house of Orléans and the Burgundies. The Englishmen occupied great areas of France: Poitou of Calais in year 1360, northern/west regions, including Paris, in 1415. The Agreement of Troyes (1420) appointed the English King Heinrich V to sovereign France and heir the French crown. The candidate on the throne from the house Valois could assert himself only in the south.

The appearance of Jeanne d'Arc changed the situation fast. It succeeded the young girl from the Lorrainese village of Domrémy, to arouse the feelings of the lost hope at the crowd. With her companion she reached the French army numerous victories: the siege of Orléans broke up and Karl VII came to Reims for his crown in 1429; in 1436 France got taken; 1453 the Englishmen lost (with the exception of Calais, that kept taken until 1558) all French areas.

The 100 year war was officially over.
